The single biggest surprise about planning a China surf trip? For most travellers, there's no visa involved at all. Hainan — China's tropical island province and home of the PerfectSwell® wave pool at Riyue Bay — offers 30 days of visa-free entry to passport holders from the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Canada and many other countries. This guide covers how the policy works and how to build a trip around it.
How Hainan's visa-free policy works
Hainan runs its own visa-free entry policy, separate from the paperwork most people associate with travel to China. If you hold a passport from the United States, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Canada or one of many other eligible countries, you can enter Hainan and stay for up to 30 days — no visa application, no embassy appointment, no queues.
In practice, that means a Hainan surf trip is no harder to book than a trip to Bali or Fiji: choose your dates, book your flights, and fly. For most of our guests, the visa question that stalled their China plans for years simply disappears.
Flights: getting to the island
Hainan has two international gateways: Haikou (HAK) in the north and Sanya (SYX) in the south. Coming from Australia, there are direct flights from Sydney and Melbourne to Haikou — you can leave home in the evening and be on the island the next day. From almost anywhere else, connect through Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Seoul, all of which have direct routes into Hainan.
Both airports work for a Riyue Bay trip. Our getting here guide breaks down the routes in detail, and we'll tell you which airport suits your itinerary when you book.
After you land: the transfer to Riyue Bay
From either airport, our private executive van takes you straight to Riyue Bay Surf Resort in Wanning on the island's east coast — around two hours of coastline, coconut groves and buffalo fields. You check into five-star accommodation steps from the pool, and the trip starts the next morning with waves.
Practical tips before you fly
The arrival is handled for you. An English-speaking driver from our team meets you in the arrivals hall holding a sign with your name, and a WhatsApp number is shared in advance so you always have a real person to reach. We track your flight live — if you're delayed, the driver shifts with the new arrival time, and late-night arrivals are fine because the resort accepts check-ins around the clock.
Transfers are included. Every package includes round-trip private transfers between either airport and the resort — a modern business van with Wi-Fi, bottled water and space for boards and luggage, seating up to six per vehicle (bigger groups get a second car). There's nothing extra to book or pay for the drive.
Entry is simpler than you think. Beyond the five countries above, travellers from many other countries can enter Hainan visa-free under Hainan's own 30-day policy and China's wider visa-free schemes. When you book, we confirm your eligibility and entry route and walk you through the short registration step — see our trip support page for everything else we handle on the ground.
What to do with your 30 days
Surf the pool — and the ocean
The PerfectSwell® pool at Riyue Bay is the world's only wave pool on a tropical island, with around twenty wave settings running from mellow beginner rollers to barrels and air sections. Every session is dialled to your level — see the surf session for how it works. When the swell turns on, Riyue Bay's ocean break is a short walk away, so you get both perfect machine-made waves and real ocean surf on the same trip.
Play China's best golf
Golfers are spoiled here. The Dunes at Shenzhou Peninsula — widely rated the best links course in China — runs along the headland near Wanning, and Blackstone at Mission Hills Haikou, a former world top-100 course played by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, cuts through ancient black lava fields up north. The full surf & golf experience pairs morning pool sessions with afternoon rounds.
Eat and explore tropical China
The 30-day window is what makes this trip more than a surf mission. Between sessions, drink your way through the Xinglong coffee plantations, eat through Wanning's seafood and local cuisine, and step into two thousand years of island culture. This is the tropical China most people don't know exists.
