The best time of year for a Hainan surf trip

Every surf destination has a season — a window you plan around and pray over. Hainan plays by different rules, because the wave pool doesn't read forecasts. Here's the season-by-season guide.

Ask when to surf Bali, and you'll get a dry-season answer. Ask when to surf Hainan, and the honest reply is: it depends on what you want from the trip — because the PerfectSwell® wave pool at Riyue Bay runs year-round, while the ocean, the golf weather and the crowds each keep their own calendar. This guide walks through the year season by season, so you can pick the window that fits your surfing, your group, and your appetite for a typhoon-swell gamble.

Start with the thing that never closes for a season

Most surf trips are built on hope: you book flights months out, then watch the forecast fall apart the week you land. Wanning removes that bet. The wave pool at Riyue Bay — the world's only wave pool on a tropical island — runs on a published schedule with around twenty wave settings, from mellow beginner rollers to barrels and air sections. Whatever month you choose, your sessions run.

That flips the planning question. Instead of "when are the waves good?", you're really asking: what do I want around the pool? Ocean swell, golf weather, quiet mid-week sessions, a family holiday window — each points to a different part of the year.

In Wanning, the forecast doesn't decide whether you surf. It only decides what you surf besides the pool.

The cooler months: Hainan's prime window

If you want the full Hainan experience — pool sessions and real ocean surf — aim for the cooler months, roughly late autumn through winter. This is when the dependable seasonal swell wraps into the east coast and Riyue Bay does what made it the home of Chinese surfing: long, organized walls that suit longboards and mid-lengths beautifully. There are world-class longboard waves on this coast — the WSL has run competitions here. Our Riyue Bay surf guide covers the ocean side in detail.

It's also the most comfortable stretch of the year to be outside all day — which matters if your trip includes 36 holes. The cooler window is peak season for walking China's two best courses: The Dunes at Shenzhou Peninsula, the country's best links, thirty minutes from the pool; and Blackstone at Mission Hills, the black-lava course Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy played, up by Haikou airport.

The warmer months: heat, space, and the typhoon wildcard

The warmer half of the year is classic tropical island: hot, lush, and greener by the week. The pool runs its schedule — with more of the day's appeal shifting to morning and evening sessions, when the light goes gold and the heat backs off. The operator will pause sessions for lightning, typhoon conditions or extreme heat, and we confirm every booked session before you travel and again on the day.

The ocean in this window is a wildcard. When a typhoon swell tracks through the South China Sea at the right distance and angle, the coast can light up with faster, more powerful waves suited to experienced surfers. You can't plan a trip around it — but if it happens while you're here, it's the session you'll talk about for years. The rest of the time, the pool carries the trip, which is exactly what it's for. More on how the ocean windows work on our ocean surfing page.

Crowds: the two weeks to plan around

Hainan is China's holiday island, and two periods bring the domestic travel peak: Golden Week, the national holiday in the first week of October, and Chinese New Year, which moves between late January and mid-February. Neither is a reason to stay away — the island is at its most alive — but flights and resorts fill earlier and cost more, so book well ahead if your dates land on them.

If you want the opposite of a crowd, there's a simple lever: a private session, where your group takes the whole pool for the hour and picks the wave setting — including the pro barrel and air waves that don't appear on the public calendar.

One date to know for 2026

The pool closes occasionally for scheduled upgrades, and there's one such window now: 25 August to 23 September 2026, reopening on 24 September. The published session calendar for late September and October is already live, so you can see exactly which wave setting runs at which hour before you commit to dates. Ocean surfing, golf and everything else in Wanning carries on as normal during the upgrade window.

Timing your Hainan trip — FAQ

Can you surf in Hainan all year round?

Yes. The PerfectSwell wave pool at Riyue Bay runs on a published schedule year-round with around twenty wave settings, so every month is surfable regardless of the ocean forecast. Ocean surf is seasonal — the dependable swell window falls in the cooler months, with a wilder typhoon-swell window in the warmer part of the year.

When is the ocean surf season at Riyue Bay?

The more dependable ocean window falls in the cooler months — roughly late autumn through winter — when steady seasonal swell wraps into Hainan's east coast and produces the long, organized walls Riyue Bay is known for. Typhoon swells in the warmer months are a second, far less predictable window best suited to experienced surfers.

Is the wave pool ever closed?

The pool is outdoors, so the operator can pause sessions for lightning, typhoon conditions or extreme heat. It also closes occasionally for scheduled upgrades — in 2026, from 25 August to 23 September, reopening 24 September. We confirm your exact sessions before you travel and again on the day.

What's the best time for a combined surf and golf trip?

The cooler months are the sweet spot: dependable ocean swell for surf days, comfortable temperatures for walking The Dunes at Shenzhou Peninsula or Blackstone at Mission Hills, and the wave pool running its usual schedule. Just book early around Golden Week in early October and Chinese New Year, when domestic travel peaks.
