Where to stay at Riyue Bay: the surf hotel inside the wave pool grounds

No taxis, no shuttle, no gate between your room and the lineup. A guide to UECHAO Hotel Riyuebay — the purpose-built surf resort that shares its grounds with the PerfectSwell® pool and the beach at Riyue Bay, Wanning, Hainan.

Every surf trip has the same quiet tax: the distance between where you sleep and where the waves are. Ten minutes in a taxi each way, twice a day, a board under your arm, and a week has lost a working day to transfers. At Riyue Bay in Wanning, Hainan, that distance is about a minute on foot. UECHAO Hotel Riyuebay is a purpose-built surf resort set inside the surf-park grounds — the rooms, the lounge, the dining hall, the PerfectSwell® wave pool and the South China Sea are one property. This is where to stay, and why it changes the shape of the trip.

The hotel and the surf pool are one place

Stand on the pool deck and look inland: the long block behind the beach is the hotel. Those are the standard rooms — Ocean & Pool View on the upper floors, Garden View lower down — and they look straight out over the pool to the sea beyond it. Between the main block and the sand sit the low courtyard buildings, wrapped in tropical gardens, where the courtyard rooms and the Owner’s Suite live. The lounge, dining hall and surf club are on the pool deck itself. Step out of any of them and your room is in front of you.

That layout is the whole argument for staying here. Breakfast, your board, the lounge and the lineup are all about a minute from your door, with no shuttle or gate in between. Riyue Bay beach — the home of Chinese surfing, with real ocean surf when the swell is running — is on the other side of the same grounds. You can check the pool session from your balcony before you decide whether to get out of bed.

Six room types, from garden view to the Owner’s Suite

Ocean & Pool View and Garden View rooms

The same 45㎡ room with a private balcony, in two aspects. Ocean & Pool View sits on the top floors facing the wave pool and the sea — the room to book if you want to wake up and read the session from bed. Garden View is the same room lower down, with the balcony over the resort’s tropical gardens and the gentlest price in the house. Both come with a king bed or twin beds and sleep two to four.

Surfyard Room

A larger 52㎡ king room on the ground level of the surf yard, with a sunken lounge built for post-session downtime. Walk out of your room and you are on the pool deck — the shortest commute in surfing.

Family Garden Room

Two double beds and a proper dining area on the lower floors, close to the kids’ club, the playground and the pool. Built for families learning to surf together — our guide to family surf trips in a wave pool covers how the ~20 wave settings let kids and parents share the same hour of water.

Designer Room and Designer Suite

Designed by Shuhei Aoyama: warm, minimal interiors in timber, stone and linen, softened by natural light, with a rest-and-read corner in the room and a separate sitting area, deeper tub and expanded wardrobe in the suite. The quiet option for a longer stay.

Owner’s Suite

The signature residence — 72㎡ with a separate living room and views over the surf yard, sitting in the courtyard closest to the pool deck. The most spacious way to stay, for couples or a small family settling in for a week.

The best surf hotel is the one you never have to leave to go surfing. At Riyue Bay, the lineup is part of the address.

Breakfast is included — and served until 1:30 PM

Every stay includes a daily tropical breakfast buffet at the on-site dining hall: fresh fruit, hot dishes, pastries and local Hainan specialties. The detail that matters to surfers is the closing time. Breakfast runs until 1:30 PM, so a dawn session in the pool or a morning on the beach never costs you the meal — surf first, eat second, and still make it. When you want to go further than the buffet, Wanning’s food and Xinglong coffee are a short drive inland.

Fitted out like a surf basecamp

Beyond the rooms, the resort is built around the rhythm of a two-session day: train, rinse, recover, repeat. A fully equipped gym looks onto the gardens and is free for all guests — useful for staying paddle-fit between sessions. A self-service laundry room with washers and dryers is also free, which is a small thing until you are on day five of wet boardshorts. There is a palm-lined outdoor lap pool with a sunbathing deck for the days you want water without waves, and a rooftop lounge and bar above the resort for replaying the day’s rides over a sundowner.

The rest of the list is what a proper resort should have: an on-site restaurant and bar, a kids’ club and playground, a 24-hour front desk, butler service, free private parking with EV charging, free Wi-Fi throughout and luggage storage for the last day. Boards, wetsuits and rash guards live steps away in the rental quiver, so you can arrive with hand luggage and still surf a performance shortboard.

Staying here makes the rest of the trip simpler

Because the room and the pool are one place, everything else fits around them. Golf pairs naturally: The Dunes at Shenzhou Peninsula, the best links course in China, and Blackstone at Mission Hills Haikou, a former world top-100 played by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy across black lava fields, both slot into the same week — our 6-day surf and golf itinerary shows how. Travelling as a crew? The pool can be booked privately, and with the whole group sleeping on the deck there is no rendezvous to organise. The surf calendar tells you what the pool and the ocean are doing on your dates.

Getting here is simple too. Hainan offers 30-day visa-free entry for passport holders from the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Canada and many other countries. Fly direct from Sydney or Melbourne to Haikou (HAK), or connect through Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Seoul into Haikou or Sanya (SYX); the getting here guide covers airports and transfers to the bay.

Which room should you book?

Surfing two sessions a day and little else: the Surfyard Room, for the walk-out-onto-the-deck commute. Couples who want the view: Ocean & Pool View, top floors. Families: the Family Garden Room, near the kids’ club. A longer stay with somewhere to sit that isn’t the bed: a Designer Suite or the Owner’s Suite. Best value that is still a minute from the waves: Garden View. Whichever you pick, rooms fill up fast around the best swell windows, so book the room and the session at the same time.
