Surfers in Seoul, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur know the problem: the swell is seasonal, the good breaks are a boat ride or a long flight away, and a week off work does not stretch far. Hainan changes the maths. From all three cities there are direct routes into the island, the PerfectSwell® wave pool at Riyue Bay in Wanning is the world’s only wave pool on a tropical island, and it runs about 20 wave settings on a schedule that does not care what the ocean is doing. This is how a surfer from Seoul, Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur turns a long weekend into a wave pool trip.
Why Hainan works for surfers in Seoul, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur
Most surf trips out of Asia’s hub cities are a gamble on the forecast. At Riyue Bay you book the wave. Each session is a fixed block on one setting matched to your level, so a three-night trip can hold four to six real sessions, and none of them depends on a swell window. Add a warm tropical climate, a surf hotel inside the pool grounds, and an island that also offers ocean surf, rainforest waterfalls, coffee country and some of the best golf in China, and a short trip feels like a full one. If you have not seen how the settings work, the PerfectSwell explainer is the place to start.

Getting from Seoul, Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur to Riyue Bay
Hainan has two gateways, Haikou (HAK) and Sanya (SYX). Riyue Bay is about two hours from Haikou by road and about one hour from Sanya, and either airport works. Which one is better depends on your city.
From Seoul
Seoul has direct routes to both Haikou and Sanya, which gives Korean surfers the most flexibility: pick whichever airport has the better schedule for your dates, and fly home from the other if that suits you. Sanya is the shorter drive to the pool.
From Bangkok
Bangkok has direct routes into Haikou. It is the natural choice for Thai surfers and for anyone connecting through Bangkok from Europe or the Middle East.
From Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur also has direct routes into Haikou, so Malaysian surfers can reach the island without a stopover. Our complete guide to getting to Riyue Bay compares HAK and SYX in detail, and the getting here page lists the routes by region. Flight schedules change by season, so check current timetables when you book.

Visa and entry
Hainan runs its own 30-day visa-free entry for passport holders from the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Canada and many other countries, and China’s wider visa-free schemes cover further nationalities. Rules differ by passport and change over time, so tell us your nationality when you enquire and we will confirm your eligibility before you fly. Our Hainan visa-free guide explains the policy.
A four-night Hainan surf trip
Three nights is enough if you fly direct; four is the sweet spot, because it adds a rest day and a proper two-session day at both ends. A sample plan for a surfer arriving from Seoul, Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur:

Which surfers does the pool suit?
Everyone in the group. The pool offers about 20 wave settings, so a beginner can learn on soft white-water waves while an advanced friend surfs barrels and airs, at the same resort on the same day. That makes it easy to travel with a mixed-level crew from Seoul, Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur. New to surfing? Our beginner’s guide walks through the first sessions, and the Surf Session package bundles sessions and stay. Travelling with a group of friends or colleagues? Look at private wave pool sessions.
Add golf, ocean surf and Hainan food
Hainan rewards a longer stay. Golf in Hainan includes The Dunes at Shenzhou Peninsula, the best links course in China, and Blackstone at Mission Hills Haikou, a former world top-100 course laid across black lava fields and played by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. Between sessions, the ocean surf at Riyue Bay, Xinglong’s coffee country and the food of Wanning fill the rest days. The 6-day surf and golf itinerary shows how it fits together.

Where to stay and what to pack
The surf hotel sits inside the pool grounds, so rooms, breakfast, the café and the water are about a minute apart on foot. See the accommodation page or our surf hotel guide for the room types. Before you fly, sort your eSIM and Alipay or WeChat Pay with our China travel tips.
