How Sessions Work

The wave adapts to you.

The PerfectSwell® wave pool at Riyue Bay, Hainan runs 23 wave settings across 55-minute sessions, covering every level from first-timer whitewater rollers to pro-only barrel and air waves, with public sessions from CNY 349 per person.

Each public session runs a single setting with a capped lineup and one surfer per wave, so you get frequent, consistent sets and minimal waiting. Beginner settings run through the middle of the day, advanced settings early and late — check the surf calendar for what is running on your dates. Private sessions unlock the full wave menu, barrels and airs included.

A surf lesson in the wave pool with a coach in the water
01 — First Timers

Learn to Surf

Kids & adultsCoach in the waterLesson pricing on request

Your first wave, handled gently. Sessions start with instruction on land — paddling, popping up, where to stand — then move into gentle rolling waves with coaches in the water pushing you into every ride. Groups stay small, at most four surfers per coach, with private instructors available if you would rather have a coach to yourself. Softboards are provided for the session setup and life jackets are there on request. The usual guideline is age six and up, 1.2 m tall, and a comfortable short swim. Most first-timers are standing before the hour is out — and since every wave is filmed, you will have proof.

Past your first lesson and ready for more. The beginner setting delivers gentle, ground-swell-style waves with a long, easy roll-in — plenty of time to find your feet, settle your balance, and start turning the board on purpose instead of by accident. One surfer per wave, steady sets, and experienced coaches nearby for help and encouragement, so every session is packed with repetitions. Soft tops are available for the session setup, the pool alternates lefts and rights day by day, and you should be able to paddle into a wave and stand on a moving board before you book this one.

This is the repetition machine. A consistent, chest-to-head-high wall with an angled roll-in take-off gives you a long, clean face to connect turns and try new manoeuvres — think a friendly day at Trestles, on repeat. Two settings run at this level: a punchier wall for stringing turns together, and a long, mellow one made for noseriding and trim. Soft and hard boards are both welcome; a standard shortboard or a small-wave board with a little extra volume works beautifully. You should know your etiquette, catch your own waves, and be confident on the open face, frontside and backside.

Advanced

Powerful & playful55 minCNY 448 / person

Uncrowded, chest-to-head-high waves with real push — a quick take-off into a long, open face with room for big wrapping turns, a barrel section, and even an air if you time it right. Like a great day on the Gold Coast, except it arrives on schedule, every set, with one surfer on every wave. Bring a high-performance shortboard or pull one from our quiver; grovelers and fun-boards are a blast too, though logs will feel sluggish. This setting asks for steep, fast drop-ins and confident rail work both ways — it is not the place to learn, it is the place to perform.

Pro — Barrels

Elite surfersPrivate sessions only

Perfect, makeable barrels on demand. The slab setting throws a quick, steep take-off into a large, hollow tube — the same wave, wave after wave, which is exactly what dialing in your barrel riding requires. Rights and lefts are both available, professional guides help with positioning and take-off timing, and every ride is filmed so you can study your line between waves. It is built for elite surfers who want time inside the wave rather than luck: steep drops, serious speed, and no forgiveness for hesitation. This setting runs exclusively in private sessions — reserve the pool and it is yours.

The same ramp, every single wave. The air setting gives you a quick take-off, an open face to build speed, and a clean ramp section to close out on — the ideal laboratory for rotations, grabs, and manoeuvres you have been saving for the right section. Because the section arrives identically each time, you can attempt, adjust, and attempt again in a way the ocean never allows. Guides in the water help with timing and approach, rights and lefts are available, and the footage of every attempt is yours. Like the barrel wave, it runs exclusively in private sessions.

Reserve the entire pool for your crew — by the hour, with no one else in the lineup. Private sessions unlock the full wave menu, over 50 wave types in all, and you can mix settings within the same hour: beginner rollers for the kids, open-face walls for the improvers, then barrels and airs for whoever earned them. Pick your music, bring your own boards or raid our quiver, and add coaching, filming or drone footage as you like. It is the format for film shoots, family trips, birthdays, and the dream session you have been planning for years.
